Dear family & friends,
I have some exciting news to share! First, I have been accepted into the internship program this summer at Akron Children’s Hospital! I will have the opportunity to shadow pediatric physicians, and will also be assigned a research project to complete and present at the end of the program. Hard work does pay off! The internship begins on June 9 and concludes August 13. I am so thrilled, not to mention the fact that I get to experience this with one of my best friends, Paige!
But, before I return to Akron for the internship program, I am headed to Nicaragua for a volunteer trip through GIVE (Growth International Volunteer Excursions). This is an amazing opportunity, which will provide me with once-in a-lifetime outreach experiences, while building a school in a Nicaraguan community out of plastic water bottles!
What is unique about GIVE is the fact that its volunteers “help propel change in the world by stepping outside the confines of the status quo and into a world where change is not only possible, but is inevitable.” One of the projects we will be undertaking is building schools, water tanks, and other projects out of discarded petroleum products (like plastic bottles). Seriously! Did you ever think you could build a structure from plastic bottles? It is really a unique process, and last year alone, GIVE reused and recycled more than 24,000 plastic bottles and multiple tons of other non-degradable waste! To learn more about this initiative, I encourage you to visit: http://www.givevolunteers.org/give-bottle-projects.html.
I am sharing these happenings with you because I am hoping that you will share in my enthusiasm and excitement. Please keep me in your prayers as I begin preparations for Nicaragua with the rest of my team (3 other students from Clemson will be with me!). We depart on May 13 and return on June 6. If there are any trinkets for the children (such as key-chains or small crafts) or supplies for the trip you might want to contribute, any donations are encouraged! Also, if it is something you are able to support financially, that would be awesome! I have a fundraising page where you can make a contribution electronically (but they will charge a service fee) at http://www.gofundme.com/49vrcw , or you can send a check directly to me at my home address (1222 Grovewood Dr. Tallmadge, OH 44278).
If you are unable to provide financial support, I certainly understand - just keeping me in your prayers is the most important thing to me.
Much love,
Kara
